Our deepest fear…It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.

I know that it sounds funny, but I have been enjoying some softball this winter.  Yes, I said SOFTBALL.  Those of you who know me well, know that I LOVE baseball and softball and that my youngest daughter plays softball.  We’ve enjoyed a couple of indoor tournaments this winter and are looking forward to indoor practices, hitting instruction and checking out a new batting cage that is pretty cool!

Battle In the Bubble-8579

My husband and I noticed at a recent practice that our girl was ready with her things, but lagging behind a couple of girls who are higher up in the batting order and play the infield (she is currently batting last and plays outfield, but relieves 2nd base – her favorite position – and is 3rd catcher on the team).  Later, as a family, we sat down and talked about doing your best and not just “hanging out” because that’s what everyone else is doing; about pushing yourself and doing your best without worry that you will hurt a friend if they are trying to be better than you.  I told her about a story I read while working on something for my students, from the book 7 Habits of Healthy Teens.  The author told about how his college football coach had asked him what he was doing, and if he wanted the younger players to pass him by.  He said something that really struck a nerve with me AND my daughter.  He said that you have to get over your fear of being good at something.  Then, my husband found our new mantra:

quote_our_deepest_fear

I especially like the part: “There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.”  I have to admit, as an adult I have not always “stepped up” because I was afraid of what other people would think, say or do as a result.  I believe that there is a lot to be learned from this beautifully written piece, and I will be dividing it into 4 sections to design something colorful in Photoshop with it.  Then I’ll print them on canvases to hang in my daughter’s room as a reminder, as well as for my office to do the same for me.
Let’s look forward to what’s coming up:

Ringing in the New Year ~ Welcome 2014!

Like many of you who live in the same area (Mid-Michigan), we celebrated the Christmas holiday using our generator to power our home.  Fortunately, we use propane for our furnace, hot water heater and stove; otherwise I don’t think the SEVEN days without power would have been quite so do-able.  Oh, and trust me, I did my fair share of grumbling about the ice storm and number of days without power, but ultimately I’m thankful to those who worked so tirelessly to return power to everyone.  PLUS, I was able to get some beautiful photos due to the weather.

Then the New Year came and brought it’s own crazy weather!  18.8+ inches of snow fell in our area, leading to a “State of Emergency” being called for in our county for the 2nd time in  less than a month 🙁  The kids were preparing to return to school, but were given an extra 3 days off due to impassable roads and dangerously cold temperatures.  Well, I HOPE that Mother Nature has THAT out of her system 🙂 and all of this craziness is behind us!  OH wait!  I forgot that today it is 40 degrees and raining…snow + rain and cold = ice…this is where I have to get creative with my word choices and just say…POO!  BUT I suppose it COULD be worse…I’ll count my blessings: I WAS so very thankful for the additional days with my girls since we were stressed with the power outage and all!  I did get to see my grandmother A LOT during the power outage because we were keeping her going too (AND I don’t get to see her often enough, so that was awesome).  My oldest brother and his family were home for the Christmas holiday and despite minimal power running, we were still able to enjoy Christmas Eve in our home with EVERYONE 🙂  I LOVED that!  I have SO many more that I could count, but we’d be here all day.

So, since we can’t change the weather 🙂  Let’s look forward to what’s coming up:
